Out with the spooky Halloween picture book! In with “Run, Turkey, Run,” a read-aloud story about turkey trying to out-trick and out-run Mr. Farmer to escape being part of the family’s Thanksgiving dinner.
For many years Robyn and Randy Burris have updated the StoryWalk every month to feature current-themed books. Robyn is treasurer of Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library, which spearheaded the building of the Story-Walk south of the beach on the west side of Lake Eufaula.
This past Saturday they demonstrated the technicalities of changing the pages inside the plexiglass cases to Danielle Burchfield, who will assume the job for the future.
The many reading stations lining a waterfront walking path were recently repaired after being underwater when the lake water was at near-record levels. After scrubbing by Robyn and Danielle, the sturdy stations look as good as new.
The Friends started the StoryWalk with co-sponsors, the Eastern Oklahoma Library System, the Oklahoma Tribal Engagement Partners, the Muscogee Nation, and The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Diabetes Program.
School children enjoy reading at each station as they progress down the path, and toddlers delight in the pictures as their caregivers read the stories aloud to them.
A special treat awaits each reader at the end— a secret word worth receiving a secret prize. All one needs to do is tell the secret word to a librarian at Eufaula Memorial Library.
Walkers who enjoy the StoryWalk are invited to join the Friends to encourage more such cultural contributions for the community. Membership forms, available at the library’s check-out desk, can be filled in and deposited with yearly dues of $5 in the box also at that spot.
Members receive email notice of all upcoming Friends’ events. The next will be at 1 p.m. November 21 when Selina Jayne-Dorman’s students will present a play, “War Letters,” about sacrifices during war.
