Remember Jesus’ parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector in the Temple? “God, I thank you that I am not like other people, especially this tax-collector!” prays the Pharisee, then he goes on to proudly report all his good deeds. Meanwhile, the tax collector stands far off, head bowed, beating his chest, praying, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner!” Jesus says it’s the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who goes home in a right relationship with God (Luke 18:9-14).
