EL RENO – Craig McVay, a 35-year veteran of Oklahoma public school service, has announced his candidacy for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. McVay pledges nononsense leadership to bring Oklahoma’s public education system to new heights with a restored focus on educational fundamentals and accountability.
“Students deserve quality instruction in reading, writing and math. Parents, students and teachers deserve better than a politician trying to make a name for himself through political gimmicks and corruption,” McVay said. “No more BS. We’re going back to the basics: ABC’s and 123’s.”
McVay holds degrees from Seminole State College, the University of Central Oklahoma, and SWOSU, and has served as teacher, coach, counselor, principal, superintendent, federal programs director, child nutrition director, special education director, transportation director and athletic director.
“I’m an Oklahoman through and through. This place is my home, I grew up here, went to school here, made a life for my family here,” Mc-Vay said. “Oklahoma took great care of me and it’s been the privilege of my life helping future generations do the same.”
McVay and his wife Darla have been married for 42 years. They cherish time with their two sons, daughters-in-law and six grandchildren. In their spare time, they raise livestock on their ranch near El Reno.
“When Oklahoma’s schools rank 50th in the nation, it reflects chaotic leadership and misplaced priorities,” McVay said. “Improving public education isn’t a great mystery, we know what works: more instructional days, foundational literacy by third grade, bringing funding levels to a per student regional average and investing in quality, certified teachers.”
