Library gets new outdoor return box

Even a minor rain damaged books and DVDs in the outside return box at Eufaula Memorial Library, and a major storm ruined many beyond saving.

Also, the library staff had difficulty with simple tasks such as opening the box, retrieving its contents, and then reclosing it properly.

When Friends of the Library heard of the problem, their board went to work finding a better one, which now is on site protecting everything returned to the library return box.

Purchased with Friends’ funds, the new Kingsley 50 C Series return box came with a cart which can be pulled out and wheeled into the library.

Its other features help people deposit their returns. A large 3-1/2” x 18” opening allows easy deposits from cars, trucks, and walk-ups. It holds up to 380 books or 950 media cases. Its strong, military-grade aluminum alloy is guaranteed not to rust or stain, and it is extremely weather resistant, fire suppressant, and theft deterrent.

All Friends’ membership dues and money raised through Friend’s fundraisers goes to helping the library acquire needed things beyond the library’s budget.

In 2023 our donation was $2,409.91, while in 2024 we donated $10,876.21.

So far in 2025, the number is $5,727.23.

Past donations have helped with the Dolly Parton Imagination library kick-off, powerwashing the library’s outside, and cleaning up after the library renovation.

Perhaps the most beloved Friends’ project is the StoryWalk on Eufaula Cove. Friends’ members change the story each month and advertise upcoming children’s programs at the library.

If you too would like to help support the library, become a Friend by paying $5 yearly dues. Membership forms, available at the checkout desk, can be filled in and deposited with a check or cash in the box.

Members receive email notices with information about each speaker in the Friend’s Speaker Series on the third Friday of every month.

This year’s topics have included Famous Biblical Couples, Finding Family History, Turning Pain into Purpose, When Eufaula Was Only An Intersection, The History of the Blues, and The Art of Beadtelling.

Please consider joining the Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library to support the library and to enhance the cultural atmosphere of our community.
