Jeffrey James Poe

Jan. 14, 1956 to Sept. 24, 2025

After a long illness Jeffrey James Poe, 69, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025 at his home in Eufaula, Ok. He as born Jan. 14, 1956 in Fort Worth, Texas.

In his early years, his family moved many times due to his father’s career as a pilot in the Air Force. After his father decided to retire, they first settled in San Franciso and later moved to El Cajon, Ca. for the drier climate.

Jeff attended Grossmont High School in La Mesa, CA., where he met his future wife, Carol Miner. They were married June 4, 1977. While at Grossmont, Jeff was active in water polo, soccer and track and field. In 1974 he held the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) 11th All-time County Track and Field record for pole vaulting (14feet, 6-inches).

He began working for the U.S. Postal Service in 1976. He held several different jobs during his Postal career: clerk, supervisor, marketing and finally Postmaster at several San Diego County offices including Pine Valley, Jamul and Alpine.

While in the Marketing department, he was responsible for the sale of a special LeRoy Neiman postcard created for the 1988 NFL Super Bowl held at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego. Jeff briefly worked in Washington DC on stamp promotions.

The family moved back to California and Jeff began his Postmaster career. He retired as Postmaster of Alpine in 1998. In 2007 Jeff and Carol retired to Oklahoma, settling in Eufaula where he could fish to his heart’s content. Dur-ing his retirement he decided to go back to work at Walmart. He helped set up the Walmart Super Center in Checotah and worked for a brief time in the sporting goods department. He later went to work at the Eufaula Indian Dormitory where he was employed as the Librarian/ Computer Tech.

He considered his two sons his most prized possessions and his wife, Carol, his best friend. Fishing on Lake Mead in Nevada with his brother-in-law Kennie, nephew Sean O’Donnell, and sons Kevin and Michael was one of his favorite activities. He also enjoyed fishing on Lake Eufaula with his uncle-in-law, Joe Ward.

Jeff is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol (Miner), son Kevin W. Poe, wife Erin and grandsons Mason, Barrett, Elias and Wesley of Saint Charles, MO., son Michael T. Poe of Eufaula; sister Susan Adams of Belleville, Ill., nieces and nephew Cari Bruer and family of Belleville, Ill., John W. Adams, wife Trish and family of Columbia, Ill., Amy Horvath and family of Denver, Co., mother-in-law Pat Miner (Emerson) of Eufaula, sister-in-law Mendy McClure (Miner), husband Kennie of Denison, Tx., nephew Sean T. O’Donnell, wife Erin and family of Campbell, Ca. and a host of life-long friends in California as well as in and around Oklahoma.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donovan B. and Lucille (Baedke) Poe, his fatherin- law, Tom E. Miner and brother-in-law John L. Adams.

No services are planned at this time and a Celebration of Jeff’s life will be scheduled for a later date. His cremation was handled by Hunn, Black & Merritt Funerl Home in Eufaula.

The family wants to say a special thanks to the nurses and aides for their excellent care and compassion at Heritage Home Care of Eufaula and Gentiva Hospice of Muskogee, Ok.
