Man makes alford plea in lewd act case

Randy Dwayne Stegall, 64, of Checotah has entered an alford plea to performing a lewd act in front of a woman and her two children.

An alford plea registers a formal admission of guilt to charges in criminal court while the defendant simultaneously expresses their innocence to those same charges.

An alford plea skips a criminal trial because the defendant agrees to accept whatever punishment he receives.

Stegall entered the plea on Sept. 24 and Associate District Judge Brendon Bridges sentenced him to 10 years in prison, with the first five years to be served with the Department of Corrections followed by three years’ probation.

A probable cause affidavit stated a woman was walking with her children on West Knisley Avenue when she saw a man sitting in a chair in a fenced back yard performing a lewd act on himself.
