City Hall will be closed all day on Wednesday, Aug. 13, so that City staff can participate in a full-day professional development training focused on strengthening communication, building teamwork and improving public service.
The training, based on the Crucial Conversations course, is part of the City’s ongoing effort to live out its core values of accountability, community and excellence. The program helps staff learn how to handle difficult conversations with respect and confidence, which are skills that are especially important when serving the public and working across departments.
“The way we serve people starts with how we treat one another,” said Mayor James Hickman. “This training is about making sure the City communicates with honesty, patience, and respect, embracing values that reflect the kind of community we are proud to be part of. When people come to City Hall, they deserve to feel heard and that starts with how we show up for each other every day.”
The training covers practical strategies for listening carefully, speaking clearly and working through challenges in a way that builds trust. These skills not only improve how City staff interact with residents but also how they collaborate internally to solve problems and deliver services efficiently.
“Good government depends on clear communication, whether we are solving a water issue, processing permits or responding to a resident’s question,” said City Manager Jacob R. Foos. “This training helps our staff work more effectively across departments and get to solutions faster.”
