TransAlta of Canada announced six months ago that it no longer planned to develop a wind turbine farm in McIntosh County.
However, county commissioners wanted to make sure TransAlta or any other wind turbine company didn’t move forward with an plans to develop projects in the county.
In addition, they didn’t want solar panel construction companies to use county roads without approval by the county.
The commission-ers are concerned that heavy loads are tearing up the county roads.
On Monday, county commissioners passed a resolution calling for a 12-month moratorium on the use of county roads for transporting equipment for wind turbines and solar panels.
Specifically, the moratorium calls for an immediate halt to the use of county roads “for the construction of a wind or solar facility, wind turbines and related infrastructure for any wind project or for the construction of solar panel facility of any type, or its infrastructure, in McIntosh County.”
The moratorium says this will allow time to “study and address the potential impacts of such transporting of equipment and materials will have on Mcintosh County maintained roadways and develop a road usage agreement with the wind or solar facility parent company.”
The moratorium will be for 12 months from July 14, 2025, “unless extended or repealed by the McIntosh County Board of Commissioners.”
The commissioners have also expressed concern about the use of county roads by developers whose vehicles exceed weight restrictions.
