Check with the City before starting work

As more residents and property owners take on home improvement projects, the City of Eufaula is reminding the public of a key first step: check with the City before you begin. Whether you  are building a deck, replacing a roof, installing electrical equipment, or hiring a contractor, it is important to make sure your project complies with city codes, because these rules exist for one reason: your safety.

Code enforcement is more than a checklist, says City Manager Jacob Foos, it is a vital public safety function.

City ordinances, permitting requirements, and contractor licensing all serve to protect residents from serious risks, including fire hazards, structural failures, and unsafe utility work.

Taking a few minutes to call the City before starting a project can prevent costly mistakes and keep families and neighborhoods safe, Foos stressed.

“Permits and inspections are in place to protect life and property,” said Foos. “We’re not just making sure things look nice, we are making sure your home won’t catch fire due to faulty wiring, that a roof won’t collapse, or that a gas line hasn’t been installed improperly. These are real risks, and they are preventable when the proper steps are taken.”

This work reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to accountability, community, and excellence, the core values that guide Eufaula’s approach to service, he said.

By ensuring all construction and property improvements meet safety codes and legal standards, the City stands accountable to the public, protecting the shared spaces that make up our community, and engaging residents in a process that benefits everyone.

What Residents Need to Know:

• Permits Save Lives: Many construction and renovation projects require permits so that they can be reviewed and inspected by professionals trained to spot life safety issues. This includes electrical, gas, plumbing, roofing, and structural work.

• Use Licensed and Insured Contractors: Hiring a contractor without the proper credentials puts you at risk, not just financially, but physically. Always verify that anyone you hire is properly licensed, insured, and understands local permitting requirements.

• Code Enforcement Is a Safety Net: It exists to protect both individual property owners and the broader community. Unsafe or unpermitted work on one property can have serious consequences for neighbors, emergency responders, and future occupants.

• Don’t Assume, Ask: Even if a project seems small, it’s always best to double-check. The City’s staff is available to answer questions and help guide you through what’s needed.

Failure to comply with permitting and code requirements can result in stop-work orders, fines, costly rework, and, most importantly, unsafe conditions that put lives and property at risk.

“Most people want to do things the right way, they just may not realize when a permit or inspection is needed,” said Foos. “We’re here to help make sure the work is done safely, meets code, and protects your investment for the long term. It’s always better to ask on the front end than to deal with problems later.”
