Eufaula boys’ head basketball coach Rob McKinzie resigned from his position on Wednesday in favor of the head-coaching job at Coweta. Eufaula nearly won the Class 4A District Championship falling short to Tecumseh who scored on a last second shot 69-67. In his second year as Eufaula head coach, McKinzie led the Ironheads to an 18-9 record and a spot in the area tournament.
McKinzie’s resignation comes weeks after the Eufaula school board voted 3-2 to re-up McKinzie’s contract. Eufaula school board (president District 4) Jeff Pippenger, Martha Asher (vice president-District 1) and Deserea Crawley (District 3) voted for McKinzie while Kenny Bumgarner (District 2) and Michael Morton (District 5) chose to follow the evaluation of Eufaula athletic Director Johnny Bohannon not to re-up McKinzie’s contract. Bohannon has over 40 years of coaching experience.
McKinzie’s resignation came at the same time Eufaula was to have their basketball summer camp, which had to be cancelled. McKinzie came to Eufaula after a long time as an assistant coach at the University of Central Oklahoma.
