Wednesday, May 15, 1878

LOCAL ITEMS

– Rev. T.W. Perryman of Fairview visited Eufaula this week.

– Pilot Grayson has closed his school days and returned to Eufaula – Joe Tiger was elected light horse, Eugene Dist. Monday, and Jim Wilson resigned.

– Mr. and Mrs. Eiffert have removed from their home in Webbers Falls to Vinita and will take charge of the hotel at that place.

$300 REWARD Be it known: that in the name of the Muskoke Nation, and by virtue of authority vested in me by law, I hereby offer a reward of $300 for apprehension of the murderer or murderers of Mrs. Daniel C. Finn and infant who were found dead with marks of violence upon their bodies on Salt Creek about 15 miles from Okmulgee on the 22nd day of March, 1878.

Send us $1.50 and get the Journal for one year. WEWOKA Our correspondent at Wewoka ends a long and interesting letter, but it reaches us too late to print in full. We make a few extracts: He reports better outlook for the crops than ever before.

Mrs. G.R. Davis convalescing from her recent severe illness.

Brown Bros. still issuing rations to the Seminoles. Another draw in July and that will end their ration supply for the next six years.

WHOLESALE LAND GRABBING

On Saturday and Sunday last the news was flashed over the wires and by private messages that some of our citizens together with the representatives of the Arkansas Valley railway and Agent Owen were engaged in a game of “grab” at Wagoner switch some 50 miles north of Eufaula by forcibly taking and fencing some 680 acres of land.

It was then reported that Agent Owen was upon the ground in arms in command of a force of 12 or 15 men engaged in wiring in a section of land lying upon both sides of the Mo. Pa. and Arkansas Valley road, which he claimed he was doing in the name of Capt. F. B. Severs.

DEMOCRATIC CLUB RE-ORGANIZED A number of Eufaula democrats met at the City Hall last Saturday evening for the purpose of organizing a democratic club and putting the same on a sound working basis.

TOO STRONG FOR MUSKOGEE

The republican convention held at Muskogee last Saturday was so terribly awful as to cause the element to of republicans in that city who have the interest of their town at heart to denounce the attempt at negro domination and joined the democrats in calling a non-partisan convention, which was held Wednesday evening

Friday, May 5, 1911

KILLING OF DEPUTY SHERIFF JIM WORK Another chapter of the blood-stained history of the old Davis feud was written in the little town of Porum about 30 miles to the south of Muskogee in this county, yesterday afternoon, when Jim Work, a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Wisener, was murdered by Bob Davis, Leonard McCullough and Amos Davis.

Work was shot through the heart while the three men lay in the corner of the Davis barn.

Davis and his comrades escaped to the mountains that stand not far from Porum.

At an early hour this morning they had not been captured, although Sheriff Wisener’s office had sent word to every town in southeastern Oklahoma that could be reached by telephone or telegraph.

Thursday, May 28, 1925

COLLEGE BOY FOUND DEAD AT WHEEL OF AUTO

Bad Liquor Kills Indian Youth, Farmer Arrested Darsey Harjo, Creek Indian college student, was found dead of poison whiskey Monday morning, sitting at the steering wheel of his large automobile parked in the front of his home near Salem.

F.M. Brison, farmer of Salem, is in the McIntosh County jail accused of selling Harjo the liquor, charged with murder.

CITY WILL HONOR WAR DEAD HERE SUNDAY, MAY 31ST Eufaula will honor its dead heroes of the world war Sunday, May 31. Services will be held at the cemetery Sunday afternoon over the graves of the soldiers who fell for the cause.

A memorial parade will form and wend its way to the cemetery.

Pieces of artillery and other equipment will add color to the tribute.

Worst Dust Storm In History Hits City

The worst dust storm in the memory of Eastern Oklahomans held Eufaula and area in an unrelenting grip last night and this morning.

Beginning shortly after 5 o’clock, the yellow pall continued to grow in density until at midnight the nearly deserted city street reflected but dim shadows from streetlights.

No serious accidents were reported during the dust blow.

One fastidious Eufaulan remarked: “It gets in your eyes, nose, hair, house, bed and toothbrush” and that was about the sentiment local people reflected in anxious queries of “when will the dust ever stop.”

EUFAULA FARMER SHOT BY BROTHER OVER CORN CROP J.M. Shirley, 60, farmer living 10 miles west of Eufaula, near Stidham shot and wounded his brother, Bert Shirley, 51, late Friday afternoon climaxing an argument over the planting of a corn crop on the Bert Shirley farm.

J.M. Shirley had been living on the Bert Shirley farm, sharecropping with his brother.

BARNETT ILLEGAL HEIR, SAY 16 INDIAN CLAIMANTS The surprise assertion that Jackson Barnett was the illegitimate child of a Creek Indian woman who died during the Civil war threatened to completely “remake” the Barnett will case when 16 “original heirs” from McIntosh county filed a petition asking that they be declared entitled to Barnett’s entire fortune.

Eufaula Buffeted With A Record-Breaking Flood; City Virtually Isolated 24-Feet Flood Crest

Surging waters of the North Canadian River virtually isolated Eufaula this week as a 24-foot flood crest swept through this area following a 12-inch torrential downpour last week.

EUFAULA INFANTRYMAN PROMOTED IN ITALY Pvt. Willie H. Palmer, whose wife Lizzie lives in Eufaula, has been promoted to private first class on the Fifth Army front in Italy.

He is a rifleman with the 361st infantry regiment of the 91st “Powder River” Division.

S. SGT ROBER WAKLEY TO GET FURLOUGH S. Sgt Robert Wakley of Eufaula, has returned from 39 months overseas service in the Southwest Pacific.

He will go to Camp Chaffee, Ark. before being permitted to visit his parents here, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wakley.

Assistance Checks Smaller in April, Recipients Advised

Curtailment of expenditures in the public assistance program in Oklahoma is being rushed to completion.

The reduction was ordered by the Oklahoma Public Welfare Commission in a meeting last Jan. 20. This action was necessary to keep expenditures within current income available to the Department of Public Welfare.

Company M Rifle Team Best in Oklahoma With a score of 1,374 out of a possible 1,500 points, the rifle team of Company M. Eufaula unit of the National guard, took first place honors in the state meet of the National Rifle Association recently.

Dam and Highway Work May Employ Over 600 Congressman Ed Edmondson today predicted Haskell and McIntosh Counties within the next few months would receive a substantial economic shot-in-the-arm as a result of a heavy build-up in construction actives in connection with the Eufaula Dam.

Influenza Strikes Many In County

Influenza, regardless of the variety, hit McIntosh County heavily the past two weeks. On one occasion in the city schools last week 60 students and five teachers were absent.

Throughout the county the absenteeism was about the same as in Eufaula schools. Many workers remained away from their jobs, and the ailment struck all ages of people.

Local doctors were not sure what type of the highly contagious diseases has stricken this vicinity. But they are sure that it is flu and not simple colds which frequently are miscalled flu.

Deborah Jackson Wins Journalism Scholarship STILLWATER – A Eufaula student majoring in journalism at Oklahoma state University has received a boost in the form of a $150 scholarship from the Southwest Engraving Co. of Tulsa.

Deborah Jackson, a junior in the OSU School of Journalism and Communications, was presented the award at the annual journalism honors banquet.

Miss Jackson is the daughter of Mr. ad Mrs. David Jackson, Eufaula.

Flooding forces permanent closure of school admin building The Eufaula Public School’s administration building at 215 N. 6th St. has been declared surplus property by the school board.

The building, which is believed to be about 50 years old, suffered extensive damage during the recent record-setting rains and subsequent flooding.
