When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. – James 1:13-14.
First – don’t blame God. When we make a mistake, we like to hear that it was someone else’s fault. The Bible tells us that when we fall it is our fault. The devil did not make you do it – you did it. The first steps to overcoming our failings to confess and confront them. Most of the struggles and pain in my life have been self-inflicted. The same is probably true for you. We need to own our failings and seek God’s power to overcome.
Second – be on guard. The word that James used entice reflects on old fishing term. It means to lure a fish away from it retreat. We need to stop and think and realize that what may look good on the outside may cause our downfall.
Third – seeking God with our whole hearts helps us when we are bombarded by temptation. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 “no temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
