Friday morning, severe storms came through our House district. I’ve been in contact with authorities districtwide along with electric crews and stand ready to assist with any needs in any way possible.
Other than the weather, it’s been a great week back in the district.
As soon as the Legislature adjourned sine die on May 30, I headed to Muskogee’s Patriot Lunch. We discussed many issues from the planned smelter plant to the City of Muskogee’s annexation project to the governor’s vetoes and the Legislature’s overrides.
That night, I was able to meet several constituents within the district where my family and I listened to concerns about our Haskell County Water District and the Legislature. We received praise for overrides of the nurse practitioner and physicians’ assistants bills, and we assured our elders will be able to afford their medicine through the 340b plan. Women should also be able to get early detection on their mammograms. We all know early detection saves lives.
May 31, we ventured over to the Hanna Rural Volunteer Fire Department fish fry.
June 2, I attended the Haskell County Commissioners Meeting where we discussed the increased funding for county road miles. Unfortunately, Haskell County will not benefit as they already exceed the maximum dollars allotted. Also excluded are Pittsburg and LeFlore counties. Mcintosh and Muskogee counties will both see substantial increases.
Prior to the commissioners’ meeting, I was able to watch members of the 51st Cadet Lawman Academy go to John Wells Lake where they learned boating safety and other lessons from lake patrolmen and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol dive team.
June 3, I attended the Haskell County Water Company meeting. The new clarifier was turned on the next day. The company is working diligently to complete more improvements and upgrades on this system.
June 4, I attended the Choctaw Nation Elders lunch. I and other area lawmakers gave a legislative update and reminded our elders that to build a better Oklahoma we have to work together.
That afternoon, I was blessed to attend a Haskell County Activate and retired law enforcement get-together where we got to listen to old stories and some more recent. At one point, there were over 200-plus years of law enforcement at the gathering.
June 5, we had our Arise and Build Board meeting. The program is for men leaving prison. It gives them a safe home and job to learn the way to live life with- out getting into more trouble, but also to have mentors and coaches to help them become successful. A true shout out to Andy Duvall and Nathan Gormely on putting life experiences to work and seeing a vision to make a better Oklahoma, one that is drug free.
Several events on the calendar for the coming week: June 10 we have the Checotah Chamber of Commerce meeting. June 12, the Porum Landing Fire Department holds its bimonthly lunch, and June 14 is Old Settlers Day. I look forward to another week of giving back to the district.
