Greg Dixon was one of the best athletes and citizens that ever came out of Checotah High School. He helped lead the Wildcats to a No.3 ranking and won a national championship in football at OU. This past year Greg passed away after a long battle with cancer. As an Ironhead, Greg and I shared many memories and laughs of the Wildcats verses the Ironheads. He also mentioned an award for an athlete that competes at the highest level and knew that I had some input on making this happen. Greg went on to become a District Judge before his passing and was inducted into the Checotah Sports Hall of Fame. It may seem funny to those diehard Ironheads and Wildcats to see an Ironhead help a Wildcat but when you earn the respect of one another its not so outrageous. That’s why I will announce the first McIntosh County Democrat Greg Dixon award Tuesday at the Checotah Sports Banquet. Greg’s legacy will continue at the school he loved and his memory to live on forever.
