Class 6A Edmond North’s girls wrestling program will be eligible to compete in the postseason after the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) board voted unanimously to rescind a decision to suspend the team for the postseason.
The board voted 11-0 to reverse the ruling after hearing from Debreon Davis, executive director of secondary education for Edmond Public Schools, Mike Nunley, the district’s athletic director, and Edmond North Principal Dandy Peeler.
Two weeks ago, the OSSAA suspended Edmond North for committing “two egregious acts of unsportsmanlike conduct” in violation of board policy. The violations were committed by two parents affiliated with the Edmond North wrestling program at events on Jan. 18 and Jan. 25.
The first violation, which resulted in a warning from the association, came after a parent acted as a coach on the floor and was ejected for “flagrant misconduct,” OSSAA staff member Wes Ruth told board members during Thursday’s appeal hearing.
A second violation was committed less than a week later during a dual tournament in McLeod following the ejection of a wrestler for “flagrant misconduct.”
Edmond North finished second in the last two Class 6A state tournaments. Regionals are scheduled Feb. 17-18, and the state tournament is Feb. 27-March 1.
The parents have served or will serve twomatch suspensions for their actions, an OSSAA official said. The athlete ejected for fighting must sit out her next two matches.
