ANNUAL DOG SLAUGHTER

The annual slaughter of dogs through fear of hydrophobia commenced in New York last week. Nine hundred were killed the first day by drowning them in the East River. They were placed in a large iron tank, all sizes, shapes and colors and kinds. The tank lifted by a derrick, swung over the river and submerged. At the close of the day 300 more were waiting their turn.

Indian Missionary

Rev. John McIntosh, a native Creek missionary to the wild Indians, reports wonderful improvement. Hundreds and hundreds of the wild Indians came to hear him preach every Sunday and Wednesday, paying the most profound attention to the gospel.

They received him as a “messenger sent from God whose name was John.”

That we will soon have statehood in some form is now admitted by even the most skeptical. Whether it is single or double, whether it is christened in honor of the inventor of the Cherokee alphabet, or whether it comes in under the Choctaw word meaning “red people,” it is an evident fact that congress will take some action soon after it convened the first Monday in December. Statehood in any form would be preferable to our present condition is also admitted; and now this question arises in my mind: Are we prepared for it?

24 Injured When Truck Turns Over Truck Runs Wild South of Eufaula

Twenty-four persons – men, women and children, – were treated in the Baker hospital here Wednesday afternoon and some still are under treatment for injuries suffered when a truck carrying 40 onion pickers from Eufaula on an onion field eight miles south of town crashed into the side of a mountain and turned over.

The crash occurred shortly after noon when the truck, driven by S.H. Garson of McKinney, Texas, who brought the load of pickers to Eufaula this morning for the big onion harvest now under way went out of control on a down grade and Garson veered it into the mountainside to prevent it from hurtling into Gaines creek which would have meant an almost precipitate drop of 50 feet.
