The Eufaula-Canadian Tribal Town will host a Memorial Walk on Saturday, July 13. It will begin at 7:30 a.m. and start on E. McKinley Street (along the lake shore drive) and end at W. Foley/7th Streets.
This walk is in remembrance of the Green Corn Ceremony of the Eufaula Ceremonial or Square Ground and the ancestors of the Eufaula-Canadian Tribal Town.
The Eufaula Ceremony always came in July and instead of being determined by the moon, it was fixed on the 15th of July. The 13th is the day of assembly or gathering.
It was a time to celebrate the ripening of the new corn, to give thanks, and forgiveness one to another. This occasion marks the beginning of a new year among the town’s members and associated visitors.
The Memorial Walk is to pay homage to the tribal town’s ancestors who traveled the many miles from the original homelands of Alabama to the new lands of Eastern Oklahoma.
If you would like to join the walkers but cannot make the long distance walk, you are welcome to drive your vehicle and follow the group.
Eufaula-Canadian Tribal Town Mekko (Chief) Wilson Bear extends an invitation to everyone in joining the tribal town and associate members on remembering the town’s ancestors and the Eufaula Ceremonial Ground.
