The first annual Five vs Five basketball tournament was a huge success. The event was a fundraiser for the Checotah basketball program and was sponsored by First Family Credit Union. Ten teams from across eastern Oklahoma took place. The teams consisted of the sports greats in high school and college basketball. The eight-men teams had players from 14 to 30 years old.
“This turned out great, I thought. We had guys from Wagoner, Canadian, Eufaula, Checotah and others. I don’t know where they came from but they all competed hard. It was fun to see some of our present high school players playing against the older guys. It was a good lesson for them and me,” Checotah head basketball coach Malcolm Warrior said as he was laughing.
Everyone had a great time. “We enjoyed watching the games. We stayed from the start til the end. I thought it was pretty neat to see the older guys playing against the school kids,” Robert Womack of Checotah said.
Players were surprised at the dynamics.
“I had fun. It was tougher than people think,” Nick Jones of Eufaula said.
“We found out that after the first game it was tough. I’m not in shape anymore to play three games as hard as I did in school,” Devon Seirs of Eufaula said.
The winner of the event was the team, “Old Heads.”
