Three cars and a pickup truck burned when a leaf fire got out of control in the Timber Cove Addition Friday.
Eufaula Fire Chief Chad French said no one was injured in the blaze, which sent a cloud of black smoke over the area located in a remote area south of the cove.
“A gentleman was burning leaves on his fence line. It got out of control, jumped the fence and burned four of his neighbor’s cars,” French said.
The vehicles, all of them older models, belonged to Mike Nichols.
A fifth car, owned by Nichols, was not damaged.
“It was an older car he drove to high school in his teens. It was OK. It was the one with the most sentimental value,” French said.
Firefighters were able to save a storage shed and the mobile home on Nichol’s property.
The 911 call came at 12:47 p.m.
French said Stormy Mayberry was burning the leaves, which resulted in the loss of several lawnmowers in Mayberry’s yard.
A boat on his property was also in danger, but the fire only burned a tire on the boat’s trailer.
“He called 911 to report the fire,” French said.
Mayberry and his son reportedly attempted to fight the fire with buckets of water.
“No charges are being filed. It wasn’t deliberate,” French said.
The fire took place in a community located east of the Evergreen Cemetery, which is on Dabbs Road – the road that goes to Nichol’s Point.
