Domestic abuse doesn’t take the holiday off—abuse may increase for some victims or decrease for others. The phases in the cycle of abuse (from explosion to making-up honeymoon, to tension building, to explosion), are not subject to the holiday calendar. Holiday seasons from the perspective of some abused/neglected children. Children love the holidays—families get together to celebrate. Booze flows freely. The children think it is funny when the adults get drunk and act goofy. They giggle as they peek around the corner spying on the goofy grown-ups. Then the goofy turns into drunken anger and violence and the kids run to hide under the bed. The screaming, punching of walls, throwing things, name calling and physical violence is just a normal part of everyone’s home life. Right?
