After throwing all the money changers out of the Temple, Jesus is confronted by the chief priests and elders demanding to know what authority he has to do such things. As part of his response, Jesus tells them the parable of the two sons who are told by their father to go work in his vineyard. The first son says “no,” but later changes his mind and goes. The second son immediately agrees to go, but then never does. “Which of the two does the will of his father?” Jesus asks. “The first,” they reply. Then Jesus ends with this punchline, guaranteed to cause a stir: “The tax collectors and prostitutes are getting into the Kingdom of God ahead of you” (Matthew 21:23-32).
