Remember Jesus’ parable about the landowner who hired several laborers throughout the day to work in his vineyard, then paid each man the same full day’s wage even though some had worked all day while others had worked only an hour? The men who had worked all day grumbled because they expected to be paid more than those who had worked less. “Are you envious because I am generous?” the landowner asked them (Matthew 20:1-16). The men were unhappy because the vineyard owner was treating them all the same; he made them all equal, and that just wasn’t fair.
